We grow all our seeds on a dynamic certified organic farm,
interplanting seed crops amongst our market crops. We express
our commitment to sustainability through our holistic approach
to farming and by living a rural community lifestyle. Excellence
is our mantra and it's important to us to grow adequate numbers of
each seed crop to maintain optimal genetic diversity and strength.
We grow the best quality seeds we can and offer them in both packet
and bulk sizes ...

Stellar Seeds is owned and operated by Patrick Steiner and is
located in Sorrento, BC. Stellar seeds is proud to provide high
quality, locally-grown organic seeds to farmers and gardeners in
BC and around the world (last years' furthest sale was to
Afghanistan).
Patrick has been growing seed for nine years and carries close to 100
varieties of seed in his catalogue including his three favourite
seeds to grow: leeks, onions, and carrots. "I love the Rossa di
Milano Onion" says Patrick. "A fantastic red-skinned storage onion.
Large, uniquely shaped and beautiful presentation. A favourite for
anyone who grows it". Patrick also grows mixed market vegetables
and fifteen varieties of garlic, (which sell out quickly every year).
Patrick spends the early part of his year selling seeds at Seedy
Saturdays around the province, then moves into the challenges of
seed growing in Sorrento. His northern location can create difficult
conditions for maturing his seed. In a cool year he can have trouble
getting the warm, dry weather he needs in fall to help seed crops
dry.
And the harvest is one of his favourite times of the growing season,
"I enjoy watching the plants grow to their 'full term' as they are
quite different than when younger and they bring a lot of insect
biodiversity onto our farm."
As well as being a founding member of BC Seeds, Patrick has recently
published his first book: Small-Scale Organic Seed Production,
available through FarmFolk/CityFolk. Every season Patrick also has
one apprentice on his farm through the Stewards of Irreplaceable land
Program (SOIL).
